Comprehensive Forest Services
Whether it's as simple as a brief walk of your land to get actionable advice, a comprehensive report on forest health and habitat conditions, or you just aren't sure where to start, we can help.
Any owner of 5 or more acres of forest (6+ acres if a home is on the property) may be eligible for property tax deductions via the Designated Forest Land Program (RCW 84.33). A Forest Stewardship Plan is typically required to qualify. We write plans to be easily digestible for landowners without forestry knowledge.
A well written Forest Stewardship Plan stands on it's own, ensuring that landowner's can steward their forest and stay on track for achieving their goals in the long term. We clearly identify your objectives, provide detailed inventory information on current forest conditions, and offer recommendations over a long time scale (typically 20 years) for the landowner to stay on track stewarding their forest for what's important to them.
We consistently receive compliments on our Forest Stewardship Plans from state, private, and Conservation District foresters and staff. We take great pride in preparing clear, concise, well written Stewardship Plans. Example plans available upon request.
Light thinning (80-100 leave trees/acre) near Kachess
Heavy thinning (30-35 leave trees/acre) near Cle Elum
Many modern day forests in the East Cascades look nothing like they used to: clearcutting, high-grading, & 100 years of fire suppression have left their mark. These forest ecosystems have lost the ability to recover on their own without a guiding hand. Structural diversity has been lost, nearly all old growth trees have been logged, & our forests now are very dense & young. Excessive forest density (overstocking) puts intense stress on trees across the forest, making the forest vulnerable to mortality from drought, insects/disease, and loss to crown wildfire.
By thinning overstocked forests & retaining the large healthy trees, we simulate a natural disturbance event (low intensity ground fire), common and vital to these ecosystems for thousands of years. Thinning in this manor allows the forest to recover, moving it towards it's historic counterpart of fewer, larger old growth trees, as opposed to many, highly stressed skinny trees with small crowns.
We only conduct forest thinning in areas where there is an ecological need: we do not clearcut. While logs are often removed and sent to sawmills to offset project costs, logs are a byproduct - the focus is on the ecological need of the forest and meeting the owners objectives. Trees cut are the smaller, highly stressed trees, many of which are expected to die within a few decades from inter-tree competition.
Thinning in this context is proven by decades of peer reviewed research to regenerate and heal forest ecosystems. We take great pride in managing forest health timber sales for our clients and ensuring a high quality outcome. We have strong working relationships with highly reputable loggers to ensure the best price & maximizing client satisfaction.
We also offer fuel reduction/mastication and help securing associated government grant funding (DNR or NRCS), reforestation plans/guidance, custom mapping services, and forest practice application (FPA) work.
We also work closely with WA DNR and Kittitas County Conservation District on several projects that qualify for cost share funding.
